Board of Education

One of the most important responsibilities of the Board of Education is to hire and evaluate the superintendent of schools. The Board of Education also sets educational goals and policies for the school based upon state laws and community values.

Other responsibilities include:

Authorizing the employment of staff members and setting their salaries.
Determining educational standards and goals and monitoring District performance.
Securing money for school operational needs and building programs.
Adopting and monitoring a budget sufficient to carry out the District's goals.

Marquardt District 15 is governed by a locally elected, seven-member Board of Education. Members serve without compensation and are elected to four-year terms in April of odd-numbered years.

School Board Elections

The next Consolidated Election will take place in April of odd-numbered of years, with vacant school board seats for Marquardt School District 15 on the ballot. More election-related deadlines, is available from and filed with the DuPage County Clerk's Office.

To qualify for school board membership, an individual must be, as of the date of election:

• A United States citizen;

• A resident of the state of Illinois and of the school district for at least one-year preceding election;

• At least 18 years of age;

• A registered voter; and

• Not a school trustee.

Here are more details about the responsibilities and duties of school board members. To become a school board candidate, one must:

File a Statement of Economic Interests with the county clerk and obtain a receipt; these forms are available from the county clerk.
Obtain and complete a nominating petition signed by at least 50 registered voters or 10% of the voters, whichever is less, and a Statement of Candidacy. The submitted petition will require a notarized signature of the petition circulator. Nominating petition forms and Statements of Candidacy are available from the county clerk or county board of election commissioners.

MEETINGS

Citizens are invited to attend Board of Education meetings and to express their views on subjects related to the operation of the school system during the Reports Sessions, Outside Reports portion of every meeting. Public schools have historically been guided and maintained through local control. In keeping with this tradition, the School Board actively seeks the advice and counsel of citizens.
