Support Programs & Services
Special programs and services provide a variety of instructional options to assist students in meeting their potential. When indicated, an individual assessment is completed to determine if a child is eligible to receive specialized services. Teaching specialists work collaboratively with students, parents, school personnel and the community to meet the diverse needs of students.
Teaching specialist provide instruction in physical education and general music. Instrumental music instruction for interested students begins at the 5th grade level. Middle school students also have the opportunity to participate in visual arts, performing arts, organized sports, and intramural sports.
Gifted and Talented Education
Students in grades four through eight who have demonstrated the ability to perform significantly above grade level have the opportunity to further their problem solving and critical thinking skills in the gifted and talented program. Fourth and fifth grade students participate in a gifted mathematics program. Identified middle school students participate in an honors program for literacy, mathematics, and/or science.
Bilingual Education
Students who qualify for the Transitional Bilingual Education Program receive English instruction and academic support in Spanish. Students who qualify for the Transitional Program of Instruction receive instruction that assists students who are acquiring English as a second language.
Title I
The Title I program is located at the schools identified through federal guidelines. The district model promotes specialized reading teachers working with their students in the classroom.
Reading Recovery
Reading specialists provide individual reading instruction to identified first grade students.
Pre-Kindergarten
Students are identified for this program through the pre-school screening. These students have multiple risk factors that may interfere with academic success in school.
Special Education
District 15 offers a full range of services for students with handicapping conditions. For more information regarding special education services, please contact Ms. Elizabeth Bertels, Special Education Administrator, at the District Office at 630-469-7615.
