Instructional Implementation

District 15 supports the research on best teaching practices in the classroom. Developing an understanding of content area concepts, higher level thinking skills, and self-reflection are factors important to the learning process.

Informed instruction is based on three concepts:

  • Content is more meaningful to students when connections are made with known life experiences.
  • Children grow at different rates; learning must meet their developmental needs.
  • Students learn best when faced with challenges, choice, and responsibility for their own learning.

Various classroom settings may be effective for student learning:

  • In the single age classroom, children are with the teacher for one year.
  • Some teachers co-teach and team-teach, planning together and sharing the delivery of instruction.
  • Looping is the practice of allowing teachers to keep the same students for more than one year.
  • Multi-age programs place a mixed-age group of children with the same teacher.
